Arthritis in your knees

The Earliest Sign Of Arthritis
In Your Knees Is….

It’s a pretty common belief that the earlier you can figure out that you have a problem, the better the chance of a good outcome you have. Many people want to know if there is a good warning sign that you have arthritis of the knee. A recently released study came up with an answer.

Researchers recently looked at 4,673 men and women who either had arthritic knees or were especially likely to get them because of past overuse. They followed the group for seven years using two good arthritis scores. (the WOMAC score) The WOMAC score is a set of standardized questions that are commonly used by doctors to score the amount and kind of arthritic pain that patients have. The researchers used this index to see if they could find a early warning sign which would indicate early arthritis.

What they concluded is that the earliest sign of arthritis is pain going up and down stairs. A little later on, patients started to notice pain on walking. After that, as the condition worsened, patients started to notice pain just from standing. And the last symptoms to appear were pain on sitting and while sleeping. The authors pointed out that as long as you can go up and down stairs without your knees hurting, the odds are good that your knees are free of arthritis.

So how can you use this information?

If you do notice pain going up and down stairs, don’t wait for it to get worse without doing something. This warning sign is good enough that even X-rays may not show a problem yet, however this study concluded that if you have pain going up and down stairs, you are on the way to arthritis. If you start treatment now, the results are going to be that much better. The first course of action in my office is supplements which can either slow or stop the advancement of the arthritis and might even be able to reverse the arthritis.

This is also a great way to reassure yourself that you are not getting arthritic knees. If your knees are sore in certain situations, but not when going up and down stairs, the odds are that something else besides arthritis is going on. Maybe there’s a sprain. Or maybe there’s an internal issue with the cartilage or ligaments in the knee. The best thing to do is Call the office at 402-333-4848 and make an appointment to get it checked out.

Are Your Eyes Working As Well As They Used To?

As we get older, one of the things many of us have to face is a loss in visual acuity(eye sight). That means you can’t see all that well. And it gets harder and harder to see those small lines on the eye chart. This can easily be remedied by a quick trip to the eye doctor for some glasses.

But what if it’s not the usual age-related decrease in visual acuity? What if your doctor looks on your retina and sees that your optic discs are becoming pale and you are getting something called optic nerve atrophy? Then what? Well, there’s something you can do to fix this problem that’s a lot easier than you might think.

Just late last year some researchers reported on a case of a woman who had developed optic atrophy from her “water-based diet.” In an effort to control her weight, this woman was substituting water for food. Fortunately, her doctors were paying attention. They took the time to take a complete history and found out about her nutritionally deficient diet. And then they intervened before the damage was irreversible.

It could be a simple deficiency of a common vitamin.

Optic atrophy is a disease of the optic nerve resulting from a deficiency of certain nutrients essential for the normal functioning of nerve fibers. Usually it results from folic acid and vitamin B complex deficiencies. The most common causes are malnutrition, poor absorption, poor dietary habits, vegetarian diets, or chronic alcohol abuse. Other people at risk are patients who have had bariatric surgery for weight loss. Also, certain drugs deplete the body of folic acid. This includes antacids, drugs that block stomach acid (e.g. omeprazole, Nexium, etc.), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, naprosyn, etc.), certain anti-cholesterol drugs (cholestyramine, colestipol, and colesevelam), some anti-seizure drugs (phentoin, pentobarbital, phenobarbital), sulfasalazine, triamterene, and methotrexate.

The main symptom of optic atrophy is a painless, gradually progressing decrease in the visual acuity of both eyes. It also can cause color blindness. The treatment is simple. If you are taking one of the drugs that cause folic acid deficiency, talk with your doctor about what to do. If the cause is something else, then just take some folic acid along with B-complex vitamins. I would suggest 10 mg of folic acid along with 100 mg of B-complex both of which are in a good multiple.

And just so there’s no confusion,

I suggested a Good Multiple vitamin. So many of the multiple vitamins out there today are manufactured by drug companies who a few years ago saw all the profit there was to be made and got into the vitamin market. This would be fine if they put the same effort and energy as good vitamin companies do,but the fact is the overwhelming majority don’t. They use the same philosophy to produce their vitamins as they do their drugs. So if your getting your multiple from a national store, you probably aren’t getting the benefit you should from the vitamin. There are lots of places here in town that can help you out. just do the research.

How to Loose Weight On A Diet
And Keep It Off For Good

In recent blogs, I have told you about how people have a hard time losing weight. A big part of the problem is that most of them don’t eat enough protein. Researchers also found that an herb can really help keep the weight off. In this study, the researchers did three phases to find their results. In the first phase, they gave 12 men and 12 women who were slightly overweight a calorie-restricted diet. In the second phase, they did the same thing, but gave them more protein. They found that the protein kept the dieters from getting hungry and going off their diet. Then, in the third phase, they tried capsaicin.

Capsaicin is a nutrient found in chili peppers.

It’s the thing that burns your mouth. Previous studies have shown that capsaicin increases both resting metabolism and fat metabolism. So it seemed like it might just be the thing to counteract some of the nasty effects of dieting that the researchers were seeing.

In this third part of the experiment, the researchers put the men and women back on the regular diet, but this time they gave them capsules containing capsaicin. The results were remarkable. The capsaicin not only prevented the decrease in resting metabolism and fat metabolism, it also prevented the decrease in diet-induced thermogenesis. And that’s not all. By doing all of these things, it blocked any feelings of hunger and also increased EE. Basically, it reversed every single negative effect of a weight-reduction diet. Pretty good for a completely natural and incredibly inexpensive supplement. But our researchers were not done yet.

They reasoned that if a higher protein diet worked better than a regular protein diet, and if capsaicin had all these great effects, the combination of both of them might just be the ultimate ticket. So that’s what they did. They combined the high protein diet with the capsaicin capsules. And predictably the results were even better. Here’s what the authors said.

“Our results suggest that protein and capsaicin, consumed singly or mixed, counteracted the diet-induced effects on hunger and EE. During energy restriction [dieting], protein and capsaicin promoted increased fat metabolism and protein treatments also prevented a negative protein balance [loss of lean body mass].

.I can’t wait to try this out with my patients But you can do it at home. Here’s what you do. First of all, you need to know how many calories you need to restrict your diet to.

One way to do it is to monitor what you eat for a week. Then determine the amount of calories, divide by seven, and multiply by 0.8. Here’s an example. Say you find out that over a one-week period, you ate 11,375 calories. Divide that by seven and it comes out to 1,625 calories per day. You multiply that by 0.8 and get 1,300 calories. So you will need to restrict your calorie intake to 1,300 calories per day. But that’s not all for the absolute best results.

These Antibiotics Can Cause Heart Problems, and Even Death
These Drugs Can Cause Heart Problems…

Even Death
But You May Not Have To Take Them

There are a lot of problems with antibiotics. This is especially true of the newer antibiotics called macrolides and quinolones. These drugs can cause crippling tendon ruptures, debilitating muscle disease, severe diarrhea, yeast infections, and neuropathy. But don’t go away yet. Now we are finding out that they can also cause heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) and may also lead to cardiac arrest and death!

Both of these drugs are used all the time by doctors. You may know macrolides as azithromycin (Z-Pac), zithromax, and clarithromycin (Biaxin). And the most commonly used quinolones are ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and levofloxacin (Levaquin).

To find out just how often these drugs cause cardiac arrest and death, researchers used a remarkably simple investigative approach. Here’s what they did. They looked at the records in several hospitals for cases of ventricular arrhythmias or cardiac arrest. Then they found 10 other patients who went to the hospital at the same time who were the same age and sex, but who had problems other than an arrhythmia. Then they looked at how often the patients with the arrhythmias had taken any macrolide or quinolone drugs before they developed the problem compared to the patients without arrhythmias. The results were enough to make you really think it over the next time your doc prescribes you one of these antibiotics.

All in all,
the researchers looked at 1,275 patients with the arrhythmias and 9,189 patients without them. The arrhythmia patients were up to 3.39 times more likely to have had a macrolide antibiotic. And they were up to 3.58 times more likely to have had a quinolone. Their conclusion? “Three observational study designs each using entirely different sets of controls consistently showed that the recent use of macrolide and quinolone antibiotics may be associated with increased risk of ventricular arrhythmia and cardiac arrest.” Now here’s why this is so important.

If you think that doctors really know what the drugs they dish out are doing in their patients, you need to think again. Sure, they know what their mechanism of action is. But it’s impossible to account for every single possible reaction that can go wrong in each patient because every patient is completely different. To add to that, very often when patients are prescribed drugs, they are also taking other drugs. And while the expected reactions that happen with each drug can be anticipated, the reactions that come with combinations of drugs are completely unknown. There is no way to know what’s happening in that case. This is no doubt one of the reasons why the medical use of drugs is the leading causes of death in the U.S. And it’s why this is so important to only use drugs when nothing else will do.

So yourself and your family a favor and try a more natural approach before you use the drug approach. A great place to start when you are having a problem is to make sure your nervous system is working at it’s full potential first. If you find that your nervous system isn’t working at full speed, get that fixed first. If your nervous system is working, your body is going to fix things much more efficiently

Can This Popular Herb Prevent Parkinson’s?

I have been saying for years that the best treatment for any disease is not to get it. So what about Parkinson’s disease? Is there anything that might be able to prevent it? I have patients regularly come to me with concerns about getting Parkinson’s because one of their parents has the problem. Also, recently I reported to you that people who have hand or head tremors as they get older have a much greater chance of getting Parkinson’s than people who don’t have the tremors. So what can they do? A recent experiment suggests that there may be a way to prevent this disease and others using one of the most common herbal remedies.

Like many neurological diseases, Parkinson’s is the result of proteins in the nerve cells sticking together and clumping. This clumping process is referred to as aggregation. So is there a way to prevent this protein aggregation?

Research

Researchers looked at the effect of the herb curcumin on a special protein called alpha-synuclein. Alpha-synuclein is a protein that is particularly prone to aggregation. The researchers put some curcumin into a culture plate with alpha-synuclein and then heated the mixture up. The reason for the heat is that heat is one thing that will trigger the alpha-synuclein into aggregation. Happily enough, the curcumin completely stopped any sign of aggregation.

According to Lisa Lapidus who co-authored the paper, “Our research shows that curcumin can rescue proteins from aggregation, the first steps of many debilitating diseases…. More specifically, curcumin binds strongly to alpha-synuclein and prevents aggregation at body temperatures.” So does this mean that taking curcumin will prevent Parkinson’s or other neurological diseases?

We don’t know. This experiment was done in a culture plate. There is a world of difference between what happens in a test tube and what actually happens in the body. But here’s the thing. There are so many other reasons to take curcumin that even if it didn’t prevent Parkinson’s it would well be worth it. Here’s a list.

Curcumin is anti-inflammatory. It also boosts brain-derived neurotrophic factor which improves memory and brain function as we age. It is a potent stimulator of the antioxidant systems. In some studies, it improved cardiovascular endothelial function as much as exercise and statin drugs. And it can prevent and even treat cancer.

Curcumin is in the herb turmeric which is commonly used in all kinds of recipes, especially curries. So feel free to curry up your meals as much as possible. It tastes great and is good for you at the same time.

Fish Oil Surprise

I’m sure you already understand the importance of fish oils in your diet. The Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in brain function, normal growth and development, and inflammation.

Deficiencies in have been linked to Depression, Anxiety, High Cholesterol, Cancer, Asthma, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, Eye Disorder, Ulcers, IBD, and Autoimmune disease such as Rheumatoid Arthritis!

Fish Oil consumption has also been shown to help aid in Weight Loss, Healthy Pregnancy and Fertility, also Skin Care such as Psoriasis and Acne. The benefits are just amazing. As you know, I am a big believer that you should get as much of your nutrition from food. Rather than relying on supplements. I realize that some supplementation is necessary because of the quality of food that most people eat and that is OK, but you should strive to eat as good as you can so you don’t need all the supplements. As far as Fish oil goes. It would be easy to get a weeks worth of fish oil from 2 servings a fish a week.

But the question becomes is there any difference from getting your fish oil from 2 servings a week versus a smaller amount on a daily basis?

Lets have some fun. Make your guess right now whether 2 servings a week give the same benefit as the same total amount of fish oil given in portions of a little bit each day and see if you are right!

A study of 65 men and women who were all 50 years old gave each of the participants. A total of 6.54 grams per week of the fish oils EPA and DHA. Half of the group received their fish oil in two meals each week. The other half had their fish oil in divided doses every day. After 12 months, they reported on the levels of EPA and DHA in each of the two groups.

They discovered that the group who took the oils every day. They had significantly higher levels of both EPA and DHA than the group who got their oils in two meals per week.

The Bottom Line:

If you want to get the most benefit out of your fish oils, this study makes it very clear. A regular daily intake is a much more effective way. If you are eating fish daily, then no need for supplements. If not and you are interested in obtaining the benefits of fish oils.I strongly urge you to use a good supplement on the days you aren’t eating fish. shop at a quality health food store or stop in the office and get a bottle..

Why You Shouldn’t Take Antidepressants

I was out with friends last night and we were talking about the tragedy involving that apparent suicide of a pilot who deliberately crashed his plane carrying 150 passengers. The question was why would anybody kill themselves that way? Why not just kill yourself? Why take down so many people with you?

Then one of my friends and I postulated that the pilot was on psychiatric medication. Almost every time anyone does anything crazy violent like that, it’s the result of these medications. It has been noted that in certain people, psychiatric medications affect their brain in such a way that they sometimes have difficulty telling the difference between what is real and what isn’t. “They seem to see reality like a kind of video game,” he said. “This pilot probably did not fully realize that what he was doing was really real.” As soon as I could, I started searching for clues on what really happened. I didn’t have to go far.

The German newspaper Welt am Sontag recently reported that German police found a number “of medicines for the treatment of psychological illness” during a search at the pilot’s Dusseldorf home. The article quoted an unnamed high-ranking investigator who said that the pilot had been treated by several neurologists and psychiatrists. There’s not much doubt that he was taking one or more psychiatric medications. But here’s the thing.

There is also not much doubt that absolutely none of this will come out on any of the TV news outlets. Why? It’s because Big Pharma spends so much money advertising on TV that they essentially own the networks. And they do not want you to know the truth behind these ineffective and dangerous drugs. But here’s the truth.

Fact one:

Anti-depressive drugs have never been cleared by the FDA as being safe to use for more than three months. Even though doctors routinely give them to patients for life, they have never been deemed safe to use that way. And the longer the patient is on them, the more unbalanced his brain chemistry gets. For some people, this imbalance can be devastating.

Fact two:

Every antidepressant medication out there lists increased suicidal tendencies as one of its side effects. To date, 22 international drug regulatory warnings on psychiatric drugs citing effects of mania, hostility, violence and even homicidal thoughts, and dozens of high profile shootings/killings are tied to psychiatric drug use. Despite that there has yet to be a federal investigation on the link between psychiatric drugs and acts of senseless violence.

Fact three:

At least 35 school shootings and/or school-related acts of violence have been committed by people taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs.

Fact four:

Between 2004 and 2012, there have been 14,773 reports to the FDA’s MedWatch system on psychiatric drugs causing violent side effects. These include 1,531 cases of homicidal ideation/homicide, 3,287 cases of mania, and 8,219 cases of aggression. Note: The FDA estimates that less than 1% of all serious events are ever reported to it, so the actual number of side effects occurring is most certainly higher.

Fact five:

Other than the short-term use in patients who are going through an acute depressive episode, these drugs are completely unnecessary. There are many natural therapies that work much better — and they have absolutely no risk.

The use of pharmaceutical medications is the third leading cause of death in the country. With that in mind, you would think that one of the first things students would learn in medical school is all the ways that illnesses and symptoms can be treated without drugs. But this is not the case. Medical doctors graduate with a ton of knowledge on how drugs work and how to prescribe them. But they have absolutely no clue at all about alternatives to drugs unless they go out of their way to learn.

If you or someone you know is having some depression symptoms, we offer some exciting alternatives.
Call 402-333-4848 and make an appointment for a consultation.

You May Be Able To Save A Life –

It was a beautiful summer day and a couple was taking a walk along a lake. As they were returning to the picnic ground where all their friends were, the man tripped over a rock laying on the ground. It wasn’t a major fall and he told everyone that he was OK …
He brushed himself off and even though he was shaken up, he enjoyed the rest of the afternoon. Later that evening, his wife took him to the hospital and he passed away because he had suffered a stroke after the fall. If someone at the picnic had known this information, his life might have been saved.

Take a minute to read this. If you do the actions yourself, you will remember them better when you need them.

Depending on the severity of the stroke, if a victim can get help by a neurologist within 3 hours, often the effects of the stroke can be reversed. The trick is getting a stroke recognized, then getting the patient help within 3 hours, which is tough.

Recognize A Stroke

There are 3 steps, STR plus a bonus!!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify, but follow these steps and you will have a much better chance of helping someone.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the person to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK (Speak a simple phrase coherently i.e. Chicken Soup)
R * Ask the person to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

Bonus:

Ask the person to stick out their tongue. (if it goes to one side or is crooked, this could mean stroke)
If he or she has trouble with ANY of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Pass this information along to anyone you know. Who knows, by doing so,you may be responsible for saving a life someday!

Dr. Jack Belitz

Can An Antibiotic Cause Nerve Pain ?

Antibiotics can cause all kinds of problems in the intestines because they kill off the good living there. People come into the office with serious diarrhea all the time and almost always they have been on an antibiotic within the last 2 months. That’s bad, but, did you know that there’s an entirely new line of antibiotics that contains fluoride and are even more dangerous?

Not too long ago, it came out that these fluoride-containing antibiotics called fluoroquinolones can cause fatal heart arrhythmias. And now a new study is showing that they also can cause peripheral neuropathy. Increasing Your Chance Of Nerve Pain By 83%!

Peripheral Nephropathy….

(or Pain in your arms and or legs) is a condition that is becoming increasingly common. The symptoms are a feeling of numbness in the feet. When it gets bad, the condition leads to a loss of balance and difficulty walking. About two decades ago, it showed up only in people who either had diabetes or who were getting chemotherapy drugs. Now it’s becoming increasingly common in people who don’t have any apparent reason for getting it. But there is a reason. We just don’t know what it is. Instead of finding out what the reason is, Big Medicine is all too happy to just be prescribing drugs for the symptoms. You can see the ads on TV almost every night.

To assess the risk of peripheral nephropathy from the use of oral fluoroquinolone antibiotics, researchers recently conducted a study of a group of men between the ages of 45 to 80 years. They found 6,226 cases of peripheral neuropathy in the group. Then they looked to see how many of the men had been taking fluoroquinolones drugs verses other drugs when they developed the neuropathy.

Amazingly they found that taking fluoroquinolone drugs increased the chance of getting peripheral nephropathy by 83%! As opposed to no increase at all associated with the other drugs. They concluded, “Current users, especially new users of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, are at a higher risk of developing peripheral nephropathy. Despite the increase in the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, clinicians should weigh the benefits against the risk of adverse events when prescribing these drugs to their patients.”

Here’s What I Recommend.

In order to battle the drug resistant bacteria that they have created, Big Pharma is making antibiotics that are more and more toxic. The days when you could simply take a probiotic to ward off their effects is over.

It has been suggested that you don’t take an antibiotic unless your doctor says you absolutely need one. Come in to this office and see how your nervous system is working. Chances are if you have an infection your nervous system is not allowing your immune system to work the way it should.

One suggestion I came across on the internet is that antibiotics that were developed 20 years ago and more were much saver than the new ones. See if your doctor can prescribe one of those. Please remember that I am not a medical doctor and I am not trying to give you advice on any type of drug. I am merely passing on information that I have found that is interesting to me. Use this information in order to have a good intelligent conversation with your personal medical doctor.

PS There is no doubt that sometimes we need help with the use of drugs. My suggestion is that you make sure your nervous system and that of your family is always working at it’s peak potential. To that end, call the office at 402-333-4848 and mention this newsletter. We will schedule you and your family for a computerized exam to see how your nervous system is doing at no charge.

How Your Nose Can Help
Determine Your Alzheimer’s Risk

Doctors are constantly looking for ways to predict who is going to get Alzheimer’s. The reason is that so far we don’t have any therapy that can reverse the damage once it’s taken place. But there are several ways that Alzheimer’s can be prevented and slowed down. Therefore, the earlier we can start these therapies, the better. So what if I told you that a brand new study indicates that a decrease in your ability to detect odors could be an early indicator that you are on the way to Alzheimer’s?

Researchers looked at 215 healthy men and women with no obvious clinical signs of decreased cognitive function. In other words, they seemed completely normal. All of them were enrolled in the Harvard Aging Brain Study. First the researchers measured their ability to detect 40 different odors using the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test.

Next,

using MRI scanning to measure the size of the parts of the brain that are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Then they performed a series of tests to see how good the participants’ working memory was.

And finally, the researchers used PET scans to determine how much amyloid deposits the volunteers had in their brains. Amyloid deposits are increased in patients with Alzheimer’s.

The researchers concluded that a decreasing ability to be able to detect smells in elderly people is an indicator that you may be on the way to Alzheimer’s.

Now

certainly doesn’t mean that if your smeller is bad, you’re going to get Alzheimer’s. There are a number of other causes of decreased odor detection that have nothing to do with Alzheimer’s. However, the study results are still very important.

The researchers were clearly able to show a connection between getting the amyloid deposits that cause Alzheimer’s and decreased odor detection. So if you’re like my wife, who can smell something a mile away, that’s pretty good evidence that you’re not at risk. On the other hand, if you have a problem smelling odors and there’s no other diagnosed reason for it, it might be good to have your working memory tested just to be safe. You can arrange that testing with a neurologist.

P.S. Your Kids and grand kids are back in school and with that comes all the exposure to colds and other types of ailments. The best way to combat those is to make sure your immune system is working at it’s best. The immune system uses the nerves a great deal. Now is a great time to get your children checked to make sure their immune system is turned up high. This month, we are offering free computerized exams to kids just for this purpose. mention this newsletter when you call and you will get the exam at no charge.
