Jim’s Smoking Story
Jim started smoking in high school and by the time he was in his thirties he was at two packs a day. Then he got married and his wife gave him an ultimatum. He had to quit.
His withdrawal symptoms were horrific. H was walking around with cravings and feeling miserable and his brain just wasn’t working. He started taking nicotine pills and would need 2 hours after taking them to feel like he could start his day.
What was wrong with him? He was suffering from a dopamine deficiency. This is one of your brain’s most important neurotransmitters. It is used for alertness and concentration. And regulating sleep wake cycle. It’s also a feel good chemical that is triggered by eating and sex. People deficient in dopamine crave boosters like caffeine, gambling, pornography and nicotine.
When people deficient in dopamine get nicotine their brains work better, they calm down and are able to focus. They are less anxious and more enthusiastic about life.
You have to be careful however, because if you increase one of the neurotransmitters in your body, the others will be affected.
What are the other ones?
Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood emotion and appetite. This is a possible problem if you crave sweets or starches like bread and potatoes. This is also a problem for people who feel depressed especially if the depression is negative in nature like “I hate my job”, or “I hate my life”
Catecholamines are the transmitters that make you feel alert focused, energetic, and motivated. So if you find it hard to focus or concentrate, easily bored or distracted or even diagnosed with ADD. You may also crave caffeine and feel better when you drink coffee. Another symptom is when you just don’t care.
GABA is the neurotransmitter that calms you down. Think of it as the brakes when you had a spike of adrenaline. People with this deficiency suffer from panic attacks and or seizures, they may be burned out and easily over whelmed and find it hard to relax.
Finally, Endorphins are mostly known for pain relievers but also reduce anxiety and give you a feeling of euphoria. If you crave chocolate or marijuana you may have this deficiency.
